SOCIAL SECURITY ACT

ESTABLISHED AUGUST 14,1935

PURPOSE

  • An act to help general welfare
  • Using a system of Federal old-age benefits
  • Helps out old-aged people, maternal, crippled and dependent children
  • Public health in states, and the States administration of unemployment laws

WHO DOES IT AFFECT?

  • Everyone is given their social security card
  • Also helps aid the impaired, dependent and old aged people
  • Benefitted anyone who had some money in their account
  • If they lost their job or something, they'd still have money to live off of
  • Also benefits retired people because they can't really work that much

SUCCESS?

  • Helped 26 million American workers
  • Fought income loss from unemployment, blindness or aging
  • It is still around today, benefitting everyone, but the system is in trouble
  • Neither the Democrats or Republicans want to shut it down
  • Still helps thousands of people today
