Homo Erectus, discovered in 1891 by Eugene Dubois, was the first hominid to control fire they used it to stay warm, cook meat, and protect themselves from predators. It lived from 1.8million - 200,000 B.C.E. in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Everyone uses fire today even if they don't know it. Every time you turn on a light or use your microwave you use electricity which was produced by fire.

BIPEDALISM

Australopithicus Aferensus discovered by Donald Johnson was the first hominid to be bipedal. This allowed them to carry things and to gather. They also had their hands free to defend themselves , they lived in Africa about 3 to 4 million years ago.

To day we could not go anywhere without this achievement. Even driving a car requires having your hands free.

Homo Erectus was discovered in 1891 by Eugene Dubois, was the first hominid to build shelters . This allowed them to adapt to their surroundings . It lived form 1.8 million to 200,000 B.C. in Africa, Asia and Europe. They built oval huts. Previous hominids had lived in caves.

Now we can build huge cities and skyscrapers but our ability to do so traces back to Homo Erectus.

DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Early famers learned how to domesticate sheep, goats, and cattle and to keep them for meat and milk. Also they learned how to plant seeds to grow crops . This gave them a stable food supply.

In 3500 B.C. the first wheels were used by potters. It was soon discovered that when you turn a wheel on its sided it rolls. This allowed them to carry things better.

Now we use wheels to go everywhere.

DEVELOPMENT OF WRITING

Early Sumerians developed pictographs around 2400 B. C. It was improved to cuneiform which was made by using a wedge shaped styles to etch their writing in clay tablets

Now we write many things, and we could not do most things without it.

PLOW

Sumerians developed the plow to make farming easier . The plow turns the soil to prepare it for planting. Oxen pull the plow.

Nowadays this allows us to create bigger and better crops.
