KUBLAI KHAN

  • Grandson of Genghis Khan
  • Assumed title of Great Khan in 1260

MONGOL EMPIRE

  • Successful empire covering a huge part of Europe at one point
  • Many successful emperors
  • Dissolved in 1368

KHANATE

  • A political entity
  • Either a Khan or Khagan

YUAN

  • Founded by Kublai Khan in 1368
  • Overthrown in leases then a century
  • United China

ANOTHER BENEFIT FROM YUAN

  • Allowed more trade with foreigners
  • Chinese culture spread

KUBLAIS CHANGES

  • He abandoned the Mongolian steppes
  • Enjoyed living a luxurious life
  • Built a square wall near Beijing

KHAN

  • Conquered China
  • Failed to conquer Japan twice in 1274 and 1281
  • Forced Korea to build and sail boats nearly destroying them

  • Typhoon swept across the Sea of Japan destroying Mongol Navy
  • Told to try using horses

  • Mongol rulers had little in common with China's subjects
  • Kept China out of government offices

  • Kublai restored the grand canal and extended it to Beijing
  • Built a 1,100 mile paved highway
  • From Hangzhu to Beijing

  • Invited foreign merchants to China
  • Marco Polo was a merchant who traveled in a caravan
  • Traveled on Silk Roads

  • Polo learned several languages
  • In 1292 Polo left China to Venice
  • Later captured and jailed during a war

POLO

  • Polo had spoke greatly about China
  • Mentioned them burning black stones which were coal
  • Recorded practical workings of the Khans

  • Khan died in1294
  • After Khans death theYuan Dynasty began to fade
  • Chin had split in 1300's
  • Entire Mongol Empire faded
