FREE VERSE POEM #1

BY JACK SCHNEIDERHAN

It was the hottest day in July as two armies met.
The gray and blue had finally crossed paths.
As the small town of Gettysburg boarded up their windows to unknowingly be in the dark for days,
A battle was about to unfold before them.

The two armies were incessantly fighting under control of two iron-willed generals.
As cannon fire ripped through the silence like a knife on a taut rope,
soldiers were falling to the ground rapidly.
Only the second day, and the worse was yet to come.

The third day of this battle and the casualties were high.
As soldiers prayed for safety as they looked up to the sky.
The Confederates charged up the Ridge to finish off the fight,
But the attack was fruitless, and the Union hit back in spite.

With the Confederates low on men,
they retreated back to home.
The Union had finally won,
a turning point in the war.

FREE VERSE POEM #2

It started with an attack
On a fort in the South.
A war was started;
A country divided against itself.

As the war carried on,
January 1, 1863.
A proclamation was signed,
leaving the southern slaves free.

With slavery involved in the war,
France and Britain backed out.
The North had an advantage
With the south in a supply drought.

After four years of battle,
the war had had finally ended.
Together again,
the country's wounds were mended.
