WHY?

  • The Hoover Dam was built to control the natural power of the Colorado River
  • Many had previously dreamed of constructing hydroelectric power stations

HOW?

  • The dam was built using stacked concrete cubicles, kind of like giant Legos
  • The architect who designed the dam also designed a cable system
  • This system was used to put concrete barrels right where they were needed
  • In order to construct the dam, the Colorado River was diverted first
  • This was done using two giant redirection tunnels

FUN FACTS

  • The dam has enough concrete to make a highway from Seattle to Miami
  • It is as tall as a 60 story building
  • Over 1 million people come to see the dam every year
  • The amount of water in the lake, when full, could cover the whole state of Connecticut ten feet deep.
  • 96 of the 21,000 men who worked there died
