Battle of Shiloh


1862 battle in Tennessee that resulted in Union victory. Confederates ambushed Union troops.

Battle of Chancellorsville


1863 battle that ended in Confederate victory. Fought in Virginia, it was called the second deadliest battle of the war.

Battle of Fredricksburg

Another 1862 battle fought in Virginia that ended in Confederate Victory.

Strategies to win the War

  • Union- The Union: Made a blockade, cutting off the South's sea ports, claiming the Mississippi, and attacking the Confederate Capital.
  • Confederacy- The Confederates planned to fight a purely defensive war and to just let the Union tire themselves out.

Effects of The Emancipation Proclamation
This proclamation blocked Europe from intervening with the war on the South's side. It also brought over a large sum of freed slaves to fight for the Union.

African American Contributions

  • Over 179,000 African Americans served on both sides of the war.
  • Although black soldiers recived less pay, they still rushed to fight in battle.
  • African Americans also served in releif roles on both sides, such as nurses, cooks, and blacksmiths.

What did the South do to their Economy?

  • They: Printed money
  • Imposed taxes
  • Levied State-Taxes as they could not Federally.

Draft law Resentment
Many people resented the draft law. They claimed only the poor would be fighting cause the rich would pay off the cost instead. This started riots, such as the one in New York in 1863.

Early Civil War Battles

  • 1861 South Carolina attacks Fort Sumter Confederacy defeats Union at First Battle of Bull Run.
  • 1862 Union defeats Confederacy at Shiloh and Antietam.
  • 1863 Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation Union defeats Confederacy at Gettysburg and Vicksburg Lincoln delivers Gettysburg Address.

Life During Civil War
While it is known only the rich owned plantations or factories, when the Civil War started, the common family had to work very hard to survive, plus, some men were drafted and the women had to care for the family on their own.
