Socrates was born in Athens in 470 BCE, his father was the sculptor Sophroniscus. Educated in music, literature, and gymnastics. Was an infantry man in the Peloponnesian war. He didn't like writing books, so he talked at the market to anyone who would listen, and questioned anyone who would submit to interrogation about their beliefs. (4)
WHY WAS SOCRATES SENTENCED TO DEATH?
- "Corrupted youth" and taught against the Greek gods. (2,3)
- Really only offended and humiliated government officials (2)
- Viewed as an upstart and a traitor to the gods (3,1)
- Had to drink liquified hemlock, a poison (3,4)
