Background Information (1)

  • He was an Athenian sculptor who loved philosophy
  • He was also a critic of the Sophists

  • He was alive from c.470-399B.C.
  • He was arrested for Atheistic beliefs and corrupting the youth of Greece
  • He was sentenced to death and was forced to drink hemlock
  • His friends came to rescue him but he refused to be rescued and willingly drank the hemlock
  • He never wrote down any of his work, but thankfully his student Plato did

  • Other than the writings of Plato we learn about Socrates from the plays of Aristophanes
  • Socrates was the son of a sculptor and a midwife
  • He learned his fathers craft at a young age

  • He invented the Socratic method
  • This method asks students pointed questions to get them to think for themselves
  • It also gets them to use reason
