Types of soil

  • Sand
  • Silt
  • Clay
  • Loam (mix of sand, silt, and clay)

Sand

  • Large rough particles
  • Does not hold water

  • Smaller smooth particles

Clay

  • Smallest flat particles
  • Very smooth
  • Seen only through a microscope
  • Holds water very well
  • If you add water, you can mold it into a flat circle

  • Wind
  • Water
  • Ice

Wind

  • Slowly blows bits of rock and creates soil

  • Slowly breaks off chunks of rock and creates soil

Ice

  • Water freezes and expands in a rock and causes it to break which then creates soil
