vocabulary

  • Chemical fertilizers - substances that are added to soil to help the growth of plants
  • Runoff waters - water from rain or snow that flows over the surface of the ground into streams
  • Acid precipitation - precipitation (as rain or snow) that is acid

vocabulary

  • Decomposition - a natural process of destroying, breaking down dead plants and bodies of dead animals
  • Sewage sludge - semiliquid waste obtained from the processing of municipal sewage such as human urine and feces, often used as a fertilizer.
  • Excavate - to dig a large hole in smth

causes of soil pollution

  • The redundant, ever-increasing use of chemicals
  • Agricultural runoff waters
  • Industrial waste materials
  • Acidic precipitates
  • Radioactive contamination

COnsequences

  • Water pollution
  • air pollution
  • acid rain
  • inability of soil to support plant life
  • chemicals may get into food

solutions

  • Removal and deposition/burning of soil
  • Washing techniques
  • Artificial stimulation of natural microorganisms
