  • Sandy soil
  • Clay based soil
  • Silt soil
  • Loam soil

SANDY SOIL

  • Characteristics: well-drained and retain heat, away from pests and diseases.
  • Wines: Elegant wines with high aromatics, pale color and low tannin, very structured
  • Grapes: Lighter and more aromatic Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo
  • Region: Northern Médoc, Grave

CLAY SOIL

  • Characteristics: stay cooler and retain water
  • Wines: Muscular wines with high extract and color, high tanning and acidity
  • Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
  • Region: Rioja & Ribera del Duero, Barossa, Burgundy

SILT SOIL

  • Characteristics: The particles of sandstone are usually large and the texture is loose, so the water holding capacity is poor, but it can absorb more sunlight and provide higher temperature for plants
  • Wines: smooth and round wines with slightly less acidity
  • Grapes: Pinot Noir, Sangiovese
  • Region: Washington, Tuscany

LOAM SOIL

  • Characteristics: rich nutrients, moisture, and humus than sandy soils, retains more water and air than silt and clay-rich soils.
  • Wines: little flavor and color,
  • Grapes: Pinot Noir
  • Region: Sonoma valley, Napa valley, Oregon
