PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SOLAR ECLIPSE

WHAT IS A SOLAR ECLIPSE?

  • A solar eclipse occurs when
  • the moon comes in between the Sun and the Earth
  • The moon blocks the light from the sun and
  • a shadow of the moon is cast over Earth.

WHO DISCOVERED THE TRUTH ABOUT SOLAR ECLIPSES?

  • The first recorded scientific observation of a total solar eclipse
  • Was in 1605 and it was johannes kepler who recorded it.
  • Couldn't really find the answer to the question.

WHAT DID ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS THINK ABOUT IT?

  • Many ancient civilization thought that the
  • Occurence of an solar eclipse was a demon eating the sun
  • They thought that if they made enough noise would scare the
  • Demon that was consuming their sun away.

WHAT CAUSES A SOLAR ECLIPSE?

  • A solar eclipse is a natural phenomenon
  • When the moon passes between the sun and earth
  • Causing the sun to become fully/partial covered.
  • Eclipses are regular occurence made possible by the elliptical(oval shaped)
  • Orbit of the moon around earth and earths elliptical orbit around the sun.

  • In addtion the suns diameter in comparison of the moon is that
  • The sun is 400 times bigger than the moon
  • But is also 400 times farther away from the earth than the moon.
  • Which make eclipses even possible to occur and even more impressive.

WHY DONT SOLAR ECLIPSES OCCUR EVERY MONTH?

  • Solar eclipses dont occur every month because
  • The 3 objects; the moon, the sun and the earth dont
  • Align with each other every month
  • They only occur when the 3 objects are perfectly lined up.

WHY DOESNT ALL OF THE EARHT SEE THE SAME ECLIPSE?

  • This happens because of the umbra and the penumbra of the moon.
  • The umbra and the path of totality are the only ways you can see total eclipses
  • And the path of totality are only a small bit of the earth.
  • The penumbra of the moon is where you can see partial solar eclipses
  • The penumbra are spread over much more area than the umbra so that is why all of the earth can see the same eclipse.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE LOOK DIRECTLY AT A SOLAR ECLIPSE?

  • At first: people should not look directly at a solar eclipse as
  • That will damage your eyes because the suns UV light still comes in to your eyes
  • And that will make you blind.
  • So dont look directly at a solar eclipse without some sort of professional equipment

WHEN DID SWEDEN LAST SEE A SOLAR ECLIPSE?

  • The last solar eclipse seen in sweden was in the 4th jan 2011 and it was a partial solar eclipse
  • The next total solar eclipse visible in Sweden will be in 2015 mars 20

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOLAR AND LUNAR ECLIPSE?

  • The difference is that solar eclipse is when the moon is between the earth and the sun
  • And that lunar eclipse is when the earth is between the moon and the sun.
