1.
SOLAR SYSTEM FACTS
ANDREW TERRY 3B
2.
THE SUN
The sun is a medium sized sun and is the middle of the solar system
The sun will burn out in five billion years
The sun's magnetic field reaches further out than Pluto
3.
MERCURY
The day of Mercury is 58.65 Earth days
The year length of Mercury is 88 days
Mercury has 0 satellites
Mercury is 57,910,000 km away from the sun
Mercury's distance from the sun in au is .307
4.
MERCURY (CONTINUED)
Mercury is the smallest planet
Mercury has no moons
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun
5.
VENUS
The day length of Venus is 243 days
The year length of Venus is 226.6 days
Venus has no natural satellites, but it does have artificial satellites
Venus is 108,200,000km from the sun or .722 au
Venus is the closest twin planet to Earth in our Solar System
6.
VENUS (CONTINUED)
Venus has the hottest average surface temperature- 730K
Venus is the sixth largest planet in our Solar System
7.
EARTH
The year length of Earth is 365 days
The day length of Earth is 24 hours
Earth has one moon
The Earth is 149,600,000km from the sun or 1 au from the sun
Earth is the only known planet to house life
8.
EARTH (CONTINUED)
There are four different theories on how our moon was formed
If Earth was any closer or further away from the sun, it would be a sterile planet
9.
MARS
Mars has a year length of 1.88 Earth years
Mars has a day length of 24.6 hours
Mars is 227,900,000km from the sun or 1.38 au
Mars has two moons
Mars is the seventh biggest planet in the Solar system
10.
MARS (CONTINUED)
Mars has frozen water on its surface
Phobos is expected to crash down into Mars in the next 10 million years
11.
JUPITER
Jupiter has a year length of 12 Earth years
Jupiter has a day length of 9.8 hours
Jupiter has 63 moons
Jupiter is 778,500,000 km or 4.95 au from the sun
Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System
12.
JUPITER (CONTINUED)
Jupiter is gas giant because it is mostly made of gases
Jupiter has the Great Red Spot which is basically a storm
13.
SATURN
Saturn has a year length of 29.5 Earth years
Saturn has a day length of 10.67 hours
Saturn is 1,433,000,000km or about 7au from the sun
Saturn has 60 moons
Saturn has so many rings, that you cannot count them all
14.
SATURN (CONTINUED)
Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system
Saturn's rings are made of dust and ice
15.
URANUS
Uranus has a year length of 84 Earth years
Uranus has a day length of 17.24 hours
Uranus is 2,877,000,000km or 19.2au from the sun
Uranus has 27 moons
Uranus ' axis is tilted 90 degrees
16.
URANUS (CONTINUED)
Uranus is the third largest planet in the Solar System
Uranus is mostly made of ice
17.
NEPTUNE
Neptune has a year length of 165 Earth years
Neptune has a day length of 17.24 hours
Neptune is 4,503,000,000km or 150au from the sun
Neptune has 13 moons
Neptune is the fourth largest moon in the Solar System
18.
NEPTUNE (CONTINUED)
Neptune is named after the Roman god of the sea, Neptune
Neptune has a dark blue spot, which is a smaller version of the Great Red Spot
19.
PLUTO
Pluto was once considered the 9th planet of the solar system
But in the early 2000s, it was downgraded to a dwarf planet
Pluto's strange orbit sometimes puts it in front of Neptune in the order of the solar system
Pluto has five known satellites at this time
20.
MY OPINION OF PLUTO
I have chosen to classify Pluto as a dwarf planet
I chose this conclusion because Pluto is very small and does not have a regular orbit around the sun
21.
THE ASTEROID BELT
The asteroid belt is a "belt" of asteroids that is between Mars and Jupiter
The asteroid houses a dwarf planet- Ceres which is about 1,000km across
The total mass of the asteroid belt is only 4% of our moon
22.
THE KUIPER BELT
The Kuiper belt surrounds our sun and is past Neptune
It extends from about 30AU to 55AU
The Kuiper belt is named after its astronomer, Gerard Kuiper
23.
HALLEY'S COMET
Halley's Comet is a comet that orbits the sun and comes to the inner solar system
On average every 76 years
Halley's comet has a retrograde orbit (rotates counter -clockwise on its axis)
Haley's comet is one of four comets that has been visited by spacecraft
