PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT IS THE SOLAR SYSTEM

  • The sun and all of the bodies that orbit around the sun
  • Our current model is the sun centered or heliocentric model

HELIOCENTRIC MODEL

  • The solar system assumed that the planets orbit around the sun

ARISTOTLES MODEL

  • He thought earth was the center of all things
  • His model showed all other planets orbiting around earth
  • A Greek philosopher

ARISTARCHUS MODEL

  • A Greek astronomer
  • Attempted to measure lengths between stars
  • His measurements were off but helped in the future

PTOLEMY MODEL

  • He had the idea of "wheels on wheels"
  • The celestial body rotated in perfect circles
  • The earth is in the center
  • An astronomer

COPERNICUS MODEL

  • Believed The sun was the center
  • Only some planets have "wheels on wheels"
  • This model was used for many centuries
  • A polish astronomer

KEPLER MODEL

  • German astronomer
  • Thought that the planets could not rotate in a perfect circle
  • Found that planets orbit faster when closer to the sun

GALILEO

  • Made a new type of telescope
  • Found that more than one planet can be orbited
  • A scientist who approached questions
