PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

THE SUN

  • Is our main source of light and heat
  • Rotates once every 27 days
  • Is the closest star to earth
  • The suns diameter is about 870,000 miles wide
  • The sun is 109 times wider than the earth

MERCURY

  • The first planet in our solar system.
  • Is slightly bigger than our moon.
  • Has no atmosphere unlike Earth.
  • Is now the smallest planet in our solar system.
  • Has a very rocky surface and craters.

VENUS

  • Has a very thick atmosphere
  • Has clouds made of sulfuric acid
  • You would burn up in temperatures hot enough to melt lead
  • Is made up of mostly carbon dioxide
  • You would be about 90 times heavier on Venus

EARTH

  • We are the only planet with life(that we know of.)
  • We are the only planet with liquid water.
  • We are the only planet with breathable atmosphere.
  • Sometimes referred to as the world or the Blue Planet.
  • The largest of the four terrestrial planets.

MARS

  • Known as the red planet.
  • Has the tallest volcano in the solar system.
  • The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide.
  • A hundred pound man would weigh 38 pounds on Mars.
  • It orbits the sun every 687 Earth days.

JUPITER

  • Is the largest planet in our solar system.
  • Unlike some other planets, Jupiter has rings.
  • Has over 60 known moons.
  • The days are only 10 hours long on Jupiter.
  • Jupiter's volume is large enough to contain 1,300 Earths.

SATURN

  • Has over 30 known satellites(moons.)
  • Has no solid surface.
  • A 100 pound object would weigh 116 pounds on Saturn.
  • It takes about 29.5 Earth years to rotate once.
  • The rings are made up of millions of pieces of rocks and dust.

URANUS

  • Was the first planet discovered by telescope.
  • Uranus spins lying on its side.
  • Takes 84 Earth years to rotate once.
  • Has 27 known satellites.
  • Is the coldest planet in the solar system.

NEPTUNE

  • Has 19 known moons.
  • Goes around the sun once every 165 Earth years.
  • Has a rocky core.
  • Is the stormiest planet.
  • Once had a great dark spot like Jupiter.
