WHAT DOES THE SOLAR SYSTEM CONSIST OF?

  • It consists of
  • The sun
  • 8 planets with their satellites
  • Dwarf planets
  • Small solar system bodies

PLANETS

  • They are spherical bodies which revolve around the sun
  • The inner planets are Mercuri,Venus,Earth and Mars
  • They are made up of rocks
  • The outer planets are Jupiter,Ssaturn,Uranus,Neptune
  • They are made up of gases

DWARF PLANETS

  • They are spherical bodies which orbit the sun
  • They are smaller than planets

SATELLITES

  • They orbit planets and consist of rock
  • Example: the moon

ASTEROIDS

  • They are rocky objects which are irregular in shape
  • Asteroids orbit around the sun
  • Most of them orbits between the orbit of mars and jupiter
  • This area is called the asteroid belt

COMETS

  • They are small bodies that travel around the sun in highly elliptical orbits
  • Their shape is irregular
  • The nucleus is made up of ice, dust and gas
  • When the comets are near the ice evaporates creating a tail
