Jesus Continues His Mission
SOLG Chapter 7

7.1 the Church of Jesus

WHO...

...founded the Catholic Church?

JESUS...

  • Called believers together--"Come follow me"
  • Taught us--"Change your mind and heart;" "The Kingdom of God is at hand."
  • Showed us how to serve one another--"Love your neighbor as yourself."
  • Performed signs of God's power and love for us as we came to believe.
  • Suffered the death penalty for our sins, and conquered death and sin through His resurrection.

THEN...

...at the time of His Ascension, Jesus gave the disciples their job:

The work of every disciple is to put the Great Commission into action.
EVANGELIZATION:
to share the Good News about the Kingdom of God and the disciples' experience of Jesus Christ in all that we share and do!

Jesus also said:
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses...to the ends of the earth."

Witnesses: those who share the truth about Jesus and give evidence of it in their lives.
Martyr: one who witnesses by example.

MISSIONARY MANDATE:

The Church's job to work for the salvation of all the world.

We are not alone--
The Church is the
Mystical body of Christ
because it acts as the point of contact with Christ himself .

The Church is a "community ordered to its purpose" because it is a visible community that is created to embody a spiritual reality--
the Kingdom of God on earth.

TO SANCTIFY--

  • Means "to make holy"
  • Another name for the Churh's mission
  • Through the Sacraments
  • By the Holy Spirit sent by Christ
  • Sharing God's Grace

APOSTOLIC TRADITION

  • Jesus' teachings are handed on in the Church
  • First by the witnesses--the Apostles
  • Then by their successors--the bishops
  • They bishops teach the same Gospel
  • The bishops appoint helpers--the priests

HOLY ORDERS

  • The Sacrament in which new priests are ordained:
  • A baptized man...
  • Found by the Church to be suitable for ministry...
  • Is ordained as a leader to assist the People of God...
  • To continue the mission of the Church.

THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS

Section 7.3

COMMUNION OF SAINTS

  • Those united with Christ...
  • Both living and dead...
  • On earth, in Purgatory and in Heaven.
  • Mr. Chesterton calls it...
  • "The democracy of the dead."

THE SAINTS

  • Officially, they are those whose lives...
  • Have been recognized by the community of the Church...
  • For holiness in prayer and heroic virtue...
  • And who continue to pray for us, their Church family.
  • We may ask them to pray with us and for our good.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER

  • Praying to God for someone else.
  • We can pray for one another,
  • and the Saints can pray for us, too.
  • The good (merit) they did in their lives,
  • helps them stand before God, for us.

MARKS OF THE CHURCH

  • Four qualities make the Church what it is:
  • One
  • Holy
  • Catholic
  • Apostolic

ONE

  • All members of the Church are united
  • Under the Pope and bishops
  • Professing the same faith
  • And joining in common worship

HOLY

  • The Church is made holy
  • By the presence of Christ;
  • And the Church makes the world holy
  • Through the work given to it by Jesus

CATHOLIC

  • The Church is catholic because
  • Through the Church
  • Jesus is present to all,
  • And the Church's mission
  • Is to the whole world.

APOSTOLIC

  • The Church is Apostolic because
  • Our roots are the Apostles
  • And their successors,
  • And this foundation
  • Will last forever.

THE CHURCH REACHES OUT

  • Ecumenism:
  • The drive to restore
  • Christ's gift of unity

  • that at the end of her life,
  • Mary was taken up,

  • into Heaven.

MARY, MODEL OF CHRISTIANS

  • How can I best imitate Mary's virtues?
