Sun position

At noon the sun will be at its lowest to the horizon
The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year.

 Date

On December 21, 2013 the Winter Solstice commences
The date for the winter solstice varies from year to year; either on the 21st or 22nd of December.
