PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Sour Patch Kids are a soft jelly candy sanded with a sweet & sour coating. The candies are supposedly in the shape of little frizzy haired kids.
Frank Galatolie was the creator of Mars Men (which later became Sour Patch Kids). He created them to make money off of the sour and space fad of the mid 70s.
In the beginning, Sour Patch Kids were shaped as martians, to take advantage of the space enthusiasm of the 70’s. They then transformed into children to capitalize on the Cabbage Patch Kids craze of the 1980s.
At first Sour Patch Kids were produced by M & A Candy Company, which was formed when Allan Candy Company and Malaco Licorice Company combined. Then, in the late 1990s, Sour Patch Kids were acquired by Cadbury-Adams, the company that owns them now.
Early in their life, the Sour Patch Kids were produced by the M & A Candy Company, which was formed after a merger between the Allan Candy Company of Canada, and the Malaco Licorice Company, based in Sweden. The rights and recipes for Sour Patch Kids were acquired in the late 1990’s by the British multinational Cadbury-Adams, known for dozens of confections and candies. In 2010, Kraft Foods purchased Cadbury and became the producer of the Sour patch kids. Currently, Sour Patch Kids are sold by the Kraft foods company in the United States, and Maynards (a division of Cadbury) in the United Kingdom.
A Halloween-themed promotion available in the UK features their little decapitated heads and matching torsos. Plus some seasonal flavors
Sour Patch Kids contain tartaric and citric acids, which are full of protons that our tongues register as sour. The protons increase when the acids are mixed with a liquid like saliva.
Though he eventually disappeared from SPK advertising material, the Sour Patch Kid mascot on the packaging was based on Frank Galatolie’s son, Scott. He remained with the brand for some time, usually with his tongue sticking out, and later sported a baseball cap. As part of a brand facelift in 1992, Scott’s alter ego was redesigned and joined by a female companion.
The original flavors of Sour Patch Kids include, Lime (green), Lemon (yellow), Orange (orange), and Raspberry (red). Then in 2013 Cadbury introduced the Berry flavor (Blue).
