SOUTH CAROLINA INDIANS

THE PALEO PEOPLE

  • The Date: 12,000 years ago
  • They were Native Americans
  • They hunted
  • Also gathered plants to help thier diet
  • Settled near Clovis, New Mexico

THE ARCHAIC PEOPLE

  • Date: 10,000 years ago
  • Hunted, fished, and gathered nuts and berries
  • Created a tool to help propel spears faster and further
  • Settles on rivers/coast in spring/summer and moved upward in autumn
  • Followed a less nomadic lifestyle

THE WOODLAND PEOPLE

  • Date: 3,000 years ago
  • Lived in villages and food options expanded, they began growing crops
  • Used pottery to store food and help them become settled
  • They traded goods w/ other indian cultures
  • Hunters used a new technology called the Bow and Arrow

THE MISSISSIPPIAN PEOPLE

  • Date:1150
  • Culture began in Illinois near the mississippi river
  • Lived in large villages, a sign of thier complex society
  • They often had powerful leaders who regulated comunity wealth
  • A well known example of Miss. culture was the Kingdom Of Cofitachiqui

EASTERN WOODLAND PEOLE

  • Date:
  • Lived in valleys near the regions great lakes and rivers
  • Were the first natives that were discoved by European Explorers
  • Population: 17,000 to 30,000
  • They were killed by diseases brought from the newcomerss

Eastern Woodland People:late 1600's

Catawba: They were a very important tribe. Their archenemies were the Iroquoian-speaking... Cherokee:They claimed their home as the northwest portion of South Carolina.
Yamassee: Algonquian-speaking Tribe

The Eastern Woodland groups were all very similar in many ways.
