Conflict

  • South Sudan is one of the richest countries in oil, so when they separated the president from the SPL,Salva Kiir, fired his deputy Riek Machar. President Kiir blames Machar about the problems on South Sudan. Machar denies these accusations and criticizes Kiir for failing to take down corruption, so in July of the same year Machar challenged Kiir for the control of the SPLM.

Conflict

  • The army has split and many clashes around the country have taken place. UN put pressure and forced both sides to sign a peace deal in May, to cease fire and have democratically and fresh elections for the transition of government. But in January the fire was resumed so the conflict is still standing.

ethnic groups

  • Their ethnic groups are categorized into the Nilotic, Nilo-Hamitic and the South Western Sudanic groups.
  • Nilotic people include over 20 groups, such as the Dinka, Nuer, Shiluk (Collo), Murle, etc.

  • The Nilo-Hamitic groups doesn’t have many groups as the Nitolic group, but the ones that stand out in this group are: Bari, Mundari, Kakwa, Pojula, Nyangwara, etc. The last ethnic group is the South-western Sudanic groups which includes: Kresh, Balanda, Banda, Ndogo, etc.

  • Before we talk about their religions, we must make you know that in South Sudan: “1. Religion and State shall be separate.” “2. All religions shall be treated equally and religion or religious beliefs shall not be used for divisive purposes.”

  • The most common religion practiced on South Sudan is: The Traditional African Religion: this includes a variety of religions which has a relief in spirits, the veneration of ancestors, use of magic and the traditional medicine, an example of this could be: Christianism, Islam and Judaism. Languages

  • *Languages: Their main language is english, with the purpose of making a new and modern country even though it makes a big challenge for them. Influenced by Shakespeare, they chose english as their main language in order to have more opportunities of education and having more international relations.

  • “About 150 different languages are spoken in the South and there are thousands of guns out there, as well as a quarter of a million former guerrillas being demobilised and disarmed.” (BBC, 2011)

curious facts

  • Gadafi Gore, is the first boxer in South Sudan. But not only that, he is the only one who has been internationally outstanding in the boxing world. He opened one of the three gyms and the only boxing center available in this country with Otto George, his friend and coach in 2007. He promotes to the youth the passion for boxing and exercise

  • South Sudan is now the 206 member of the Olympic Family, from now and then, they will be invited to participate in the Olympic Games to show their potential internationally.

Gastronomy

  • In South Sudan the most typical dishes are the kibda (liver), shoya (barbacue beef), lahma (beef soup) and gammonia (Sheep’s stomach stew). They eat big portions and generally eat it using the right hand, a religious manner using nowadays.

stereotypes

  • Sudanese people in the Western world are thought of people very negative. Sudanese are almost universally depicted as poor, and very depressed people, and sometimes even starving. The common 'picture' of a typical Sudanese scene is one of very poor farmers, refugees, or the Sudanese militia.

  • The media promotes this stereotype on a regular basis, portraying them as refugees and in need of urgent help, or as criminals in the desert. they are displayed as smiling and happy, but still as very, very poor.
