Navajo Geography

  • Covers the corners of AZ, NM, & UT
  • dry deserts, alpine forest
  • high plateaus, mesas, & mountains

Navajo Subsistence

  • Farmed mainly corn
  • Hunting and Gathering
  • Relied on buffalo

Navajo Shelter

  • Hogan: a sacred home
  • Made of wooden poles, tree bark, & mud

Navajo Organization

  • Three branch government 
  • The Executive Branch
  • The Judicial Branch
  • The Legislative Branch

Navajo Beliefs

  • Ceremonies to restore harmony with nature
  • Traditional Wedding Baskets: for religious ceremonies
  • Good and evil
  • Universe has to be balanced or evil will take over

Hohokam Geography

  • South-central Arizona to the south border of Mexico
  • Along the Gila and Salt Rivers

Hohokan Subsistence

  • Used irrigation to grow crops
  • Farmed using hornos: corn & squash
  • Hunting and Gathering

Hohokam Shelter

  • Organize villages to separate different activties
  • One room buildings

Hohokan Organization

  • Ruled by the conquestidor

Hohokan Beliefs

  • They belived in many different gods and goddess
  • Threw people into fire to sacrifice f

Hopi Geography

  • They live in present day Keams Canyon
  • Very dry climate

Hopi Subsistence

  • Ate: horses, burros, sheep, and cattle
  • Fruits and vegetables were part of the diet
  • Were hunter gatherers 

Hopi Shelter

  • Lived in adobe houses: dry clay and stone
  • Flat roofs and multipul levels
  • Needed ladders to get to the next floor

Hopi Organization

  • 10-24-1936, ratified a Constitution
  • Power was in the tribal council

Hopi Beliefs

  • Believed world was created by Talowa (the sun-father)  
  • Snake dance to praise Hopi ancestors

Pueblo Geography

  • Native to the Southwest deserts
  • Part of New Mexico

Pueblo Subsistence

  • They farmed corn, beans, squash
  • they also raised sunflowers, cotton and tabacco

Pueblo Shelter

  • they lived in adobe and hogan houses

Pueblo Organization

  • 19 people made of the All Indian Pueblo Council
  • The council makes political decisions
  • Each Peublo has thier own local governmment

Pueblo Beliefs

  • They had native beliefs 
  • Had some beliefs from Roman Catholism
