PEOPLE OF THE LAND
Throughout history, the climate of south west has influenced the way american indians of the region lived.
Much of the area was so dry that few trees grow there.
To build there homes, south west indians used sticks stones and a clay called adobe.
The climate of the south west affected life in another way, many southwest people were farmers.
It was hard to grow crops because of the lack of water.

PEOPLE OF THE LAND
Southwest indians had to find ways to get water to their crops in order to have a successful harvest. Many used irrigation.
Southwest indians planted corn deep in the ground so that the roots of the plants could get moisture from the earth.
Irrigation- is a way of supplying water to crops with streams, ditches, or pipes.

THE HOPI AND THEIR RESOURCES
The Hopi found natural resources in a dry land.
The Hopi are among one of the oldest indian groups in the south west.
They began living in present-day Arizona before 1350.
They are one of the several groups known as the pueblo indians.
There ansestors were the ancient pueblo.

LIVING IN A DRY LAND
The hopi used irrigation to grow beans, squash, and corn.
Corn was the staple food for the hopi, they ate it in every meal.
Hopi used the recourses that were available to them.
They made pots and used them to store water and food.
They used natural recourses to make clothes using cotton they also used cotton to make robes and blankets to wrap around themselves.

RELIGION
Religion was very important to the hopi culture.
They believed that there creator brought them into the southwest.
Hopi care taking included a year long calander.
At a ceremony the hopi did a dance called the bean dance.
The hopi danced and prayed for good harvest.

THE HOPI TODAY
Some hopi people hold jobs in local companies.
Some hopi people are teachers, or run their own business's.

A LITTLE SUMMARY
The hopi and other indians built irrigation pueblos in the southwest.
They used other methods to grow beans, squash and corn in a dry climate.
Hopi culture included religious ceremonies throughout the year.
Many hopi people today still take part in their cultural traditions.

VOCABULARY
Irrigation- is a way of supplying water to crops with streams, ditches, or pipes.
Staple- is a main crop that is used for food.
Ceremony- is a special event at which people gather to express important beliefs.
