SOUTH EAST ASIA

MALAY PENINSULA

  • Also called Kra Peninsula
  • 700 miles long
  • Curves southeast
  • It serves as a bridge between mainland and islands
  • Stretches south from the mainland

MEKONG RIVER

  • Begins in China
  • 12th longest river
  • Houses very large fish
  • the Vietnamese refer to it as Cuu Long, meaning ‘nine dragons’.

OUTBACK

  • One third of Australia is desert.
  • FACT 6: Over 90% of Australia is dry and flat and cannot support agriculture.
  • There are 1,500 species of Australian spiders.
  • There are over 100 million sheep in Australia.
  • All the water is underground

GREAT BARIER REEF

  • Worlds largest coral reef
  • 400 kinds of coral

MOUNT RUAPEHU

  • It has erupted over 50 times since 1860

FIJI

  • The Fiji Islands comprise 333 islands in the South Pacific, with beaches, coral gardens, and rain forests
  • The capital suva population is 210,000
  • The day Fiji got their independence 10 October 1970 (from the UK)
  • Fiji's total land mass is slightly smaller than the state of New Jersey.

GUAM

  • The full name isTerritory of Guam
  • Discovery Day, 1st Monday in March is a national holiday
  • The people of Guam have been U.S. citizens since 1950
  • Their Governor is Felix Camacho (2003)
  • Capital is Agaña

EASTER ISLAND

  • The largest stone statue on Easter Island is actually incomplete
  • By 1868 all the moai statues had been toppled over, many left broken or disfigured
  • In 2008 a Finnish tourist was caught chipping a piece of ear of one of the moai statues
  • the tourist was fined $17,000 and ejected.
  • Before the moai were granted protection, many of them were removed from the island by collectors

JAVA

  • Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is located northwest on Java and has about 10 million inhabitants
  • Java itself is still a safe place to travel

TASMANIAN DEVIL

  • weigh up to 26 pounds
  • The devils gained their name from European explorers who heard their loud screeching noise, and saw their ferocious behavior when eating
  • Devils live to about 7 to 8 years in the wild
  • Devils can eat about 5 to 10 percent of their body weight in a day
  • Their name means "Harris's meat lover"
