  • Two major peninsulas - Indochinese and Maylay
  • Archipelago - closely grouped islands
  • Mountains on islands are of volcanic origin
  • Part of the Ring of Fire

  • Prone to volcanic activity and earthquakes.
  • Mekong river forms large delta- agricultural purposes
  • Large coastline - fishing and trade.
  • Resources - fertile soil, petroleum, tin, gems,
  • Volcanic activity and rivers make the land fertile.

  • Influenced by China and India - religious and artistic diversity
  • Produced rubber, sugar, rice, tea and coffee.
  • Mandalas- the Khmer empire
  • Buddhism and Hinduism
  • Trading goods

HISTORY

  • Imperialism - go out and take over land for wealth - competition
  • Southeast Asia becomes a target
  • Japan decides to colonize Southeast Asia
  • After WWII the U.S wants to stop communism
  • Caused Vietnam war... Afterwards, many countries became independent

ISSUES

  • Trouble building industry- Vietnam war
  • Leaving to look for jobs
  • Energy resources, mining, textiles( clothing)
  • Urbanization
  • Low housing

ANTARCTICA

  • Frozen wasteland
  • West - islands linked by ice
  • East - mountains/plateaus
  • Circular in growth

  • Nothing grows there
  • First sighted in 1820
  • Seasons are opposite
  • Temperatures can drop below -100 degrees Fahrenheit

HISTORY

  • Nobody lives there
  • Minerals under ice
  • Agreement not to harness their minerals
  • Global warming has caused some of the ice to melt

  • Lots of volcanic action
  • Australia is the smallest continent

  • Many different types of culture
  • Most people speak English
  • Originally inhabited by Aboriginal people
  • Hunters and gatherers

  • Aboriginal people inhabited: 500 groups
  • Over 200 languages
  • Maori New Zealand; fishing, hunting, farming
  • 1600s to 1700s European Explorers. Captain James Cook

ISSUES

  • Can not control the rabbit population in Australia
  • Cannot find a reliable industry
  • Nuclear testing has left many still suffering

ECONOMY

  • Major exporters of farm products
  • Butter, cheese, meat, and wool. Also kiwi
  • 15 times greater number animals than people
  • Largest production of diamonds, lead, zinc, and opals
