Homes

Round Huts
Round huts were made from clay with layers of grass , wood and mud.

Homes

Chickees were built on posts with no walls
Chickees were on top of posts from tree trunks with grass roofs and wood frames but no walls.

Lived

From West Virginia to Florida and Texas
Mountains, valleys, and swamps cover the area. Have lived here for over 5,000 years.

Traditions

Ceremonies to celebrate harvest and mark new year
Green Corn Ceremony celebrated the first corn harvest. Also marked the beginning of a new year.

Family Roles

Lived in family groups called clans
Clans lived together in villages. Villages were led by a chief or group of elders.

Food

Corn, Beans, squash, deer, turkeys, and squirrel
The Three Sisters (corn, bean and squash) were grown together. They hunted and gathered food in the woods.

Clothing

Wore Breechcloths and robes made of skins
Because of the warm weather, needed very little clothing. In the winter they wore robes made of animal skins sewed together with bone needles and sinew.

Trading

Shells for wampum, pearls, hides, syrup, salt
wampum belts were made to record laws and history.

Games

Stickball and Chunkey were played often to settle fights.
Chunkey was played by rolling a stone down a field. Two players threw a pole where they thought the stone would stop. Closest pole won.
