Plantations and Small Farms

  • Large plantations were like small vilages
  • The planter's house was usually near the middle of the plantation
  • Most workers were enslaved Africans
  • Most slaves worked in the field, but some worked in gardens

Family Life

  • Rich families home schooled their kids with payed teachers
  • Boys spent all of their free time outdoors
  • Girls were taught how to sew and sing
  • Back country kids were home schooled when their parents felt like it 
  • They were taught how to do skills through chores

Southern Slavery

  • Before slaves, indentured servants did most of the work
  • Not all slaves were in the Southern Colonies
  • Some were in the Middle or Northern Colonies

Life Under SLavery

  • Slave families were separated when they were bought
  • Slaves worked every day from morning to night no matter what
  • Overseers sometimes punished the slaves if they were not working hard
  • Many slaves wore heavy iron chains so they couldn't run away
