  • very large
  • needed lots of workers
  • workers were usually enslaved Americans
  • they grew their own cash crops and food
  • planters family lived in large mansions

  • children of wealthy planters had an easy life
  • kids were educated
  • parents hired teachers
  • on kids free time they did fun activities
  • backcountry children learned helping at early age

  • slaves weren't important in early 1600s
  • slaves were sometimes used as laborers
  • slave population grew in late 1600s
  • most slaves lived in southern colonies
  • enslaved people helped them survive

life under slavery

  • bought and sold as property
  • families were separated in slavery
  • overseers sometimes whipped slaves
  • some slaves tried running away
  • had poor food, clothing, and shelter

african american culture

  • created a community like a family
  • a source of strength was religion
  • enslaved people created a new culture 
  • made up songs to pass by time
  • they created a new language
