Plantations and small farms

  • More like small villages
  • Planters lived in center of plantaion
  • Most workers were enslaved Africans or indentured servants
  • The main crop grown on plantations was tobacco 

Family life

  • Most children were educated at home
  • Parents hired tutors for teaching
  • They were taught reading, writing, dancing, and music
  • Boys hunted and rode horses
  • Girls sewed and sung

Slavery

  • Indentured servants did most of the work on plantations
  • As plantations grew, so did the population of slaves
  • Most slaves were brought to America in the time period of 1600-1700
  • Most slaves lived in the southern colonies

Life under slavery

  • Slaves were not treated the same as white people
  • Husbands and wives were often separated
  • In plantations, slaves worked in fields or as servants in the house
  • Overseers whipped and punished them
  • Had poor food, clothing, shelter, and living conditions

  • Slaves formed close ties with each other
  • Helped each other and created a big family
  • They practiced religion and music
  • Made songs about real things to trick masters
  • Had a culture with a blend of African and American customs
