Space Matters

Space speaks to us.

Space Speaks to Us. It tells without saying anything...how to behave, how to interact, how to feel. What might pique our curiosity. And it can give messages about how we are expected to learn and drastically affect our productivity.

for example...

Space both represents the community,

and...influences the community.

"more accustomed to gunshots than gardens,

...so tell me place doesn't matter." -Clint Smith
“Place Matters” Clint Smith
“Brianna literally has a landfill in her backyard so she has a hard time convincing herself the world doesn’t just think she’s trash.”
“...the zip code has already told them that their life expectancies are thirty years shorter than the county seven miles away.”
…”grew up in places more accustomed to gunshots than gardens, so tell me place doesn’t matter.”

"the third teacher"

In the schools of Reggio-Emilia, Italy, they call the environment “the third teacher.”

In our ECE classrooms, we teach students to notice how the physical environment affects children. What MESSAGES are inherent in the environment?
What messages are inherent in this environment?
How does it make you feel?

What if we had

a designated classroom?
I wanted to know what would happen if we had a designated classroom, built by ECE students for ECE students. Would there be a greater sense of community at Boulder County Campus? Would that matter for their learning?

Our students tend to be detached from the physical college. They come at night, they tend to avoid student services, they don’t get together outside of class, they don’t attend even virtual office hours. This isn’t unusual, but since we have a connected and thriving ECE community in Boulder County, I wanted students to feel connected in the program so that they would have networks already in place when going into the field. (My challenge: How can the ECE classroom become a catalyst for an engaged local ECE community?)

Fall 2012, got our designated classroom (this is what it looks like).

Faculty wanted space to store materials, so we added a cabinet. May not seem like a big deal, but I think you’ll see, at least to instructors, it was.

“To live in an environment that has to be endured or ignored rather than enjoyed is to be diminished as a human being.” Sinclair Gauldie, architect

Further thoughts: Are ECE students enduring and/or ignoring the space? Does it matter? What does matter? Does space matter?
