GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Population 46.46 million
  • Capital is Madrid
  • Monarchy ruled by King Philip

RELIGION

  • 94% of the population in Spain is Roman Catholic
  • The other 6% is made of Protestant, Jewish, and Islamic groups.

EDUCATION

  • Primary schooling starts at age 6 and last for 6 years.
  • Secondary schooling last until age 16
  • Final exams must be taken to proceed to higher secondary schools
  • Must take an entrance exam for universities

HOLIDAYS

  • "La noche vieja" New Years Eve (Dec. 31)
  • "La Tomatina" tomato fight (last Wednesday in August)
  • "El festival de San Juan" fireworks and bonfires. (June 23)

NEW YEARS EVE

  • In Spain they eat 12 grapes at midnight. One for every chime of the clock.
  • They also shoot fireworks and drink a lot of champagne.

"LA TOMATINA"

  • Simply for entertainment purposes.
  • They bring truck loads of tomatoes to the city of Buñol and have a fight.

EL FESTIVAL DE SAN JUAN

  • To celebrate Saint John they build huge bonfires and have firework shows.

SOCIAL NORMES

  • Around 70% of children stay in their parents homes until age 30.
  • Most marriages are in the Roman Catholic Church
  • Spain allows homosexual marriages.
  • Divorce is very common and the process is much simpler.

MARRIAGE CUSTOMS

  • Bride and groom exchange coins to symbolize shared wealth between the couple.
  • Wedding rings are worn on the ring finger of the right hand.
  • Instead of throwing the bouquet to the women the grooms tie is cut into pieces and given to the men as a sign of good luck.

ENTERTAINMENT

  • Flamenco dancing. This is present at most celebration like weddings and birthdays The tango is also a very popular dance which is performed at the same occasions
  • Running of the Bulls . In honor of Saint Fermin, bulls are sent through the city of Pamplona to celebrate freedom and prosperity of the Spanish nation.

  • El Classico is the biggest soccer tournament in Spain and thousands of people go to watch each year.
