The Spanish Colonial era began with missions and presidios designed to spread Christianity and gain control of the region.

The Spanish empire
Before Texas was a state in the U.S.A. it was a part of New Spain. A colony of the Spanish empire. It Took about two century's for the Spanish settlers to come to Texas. The Spanish appointed General Domingo Teran de los Ríos to be the Governor of Texas.

Summary
Missions and presidios were developed in the Spanish. The goal of Spanish settlement in Texas was to spread Catholicism.
Presidios were small, fortified towns that served as the center of secular power in a region.
