Herman Cortes went to the new world in search of gold. In 1519 he led 450 men to Mexico
and attacked the Aztec capital. Soon tenochtitlan was under siege and in 1521 died of starvation

The Spanish established two centers of authority in the Americas. Or "New Spain". It was governed by a viceroy who was responsible to the king of Spain. They built a new capital over the Aztec capital called Mexico City. The viceroys were the Kings representative in the Americas and they had considerable power over the people. The king ensured that the viceroys would not separate from Spain by sending audiencias. Audiencias heard appeals against the viceroys and had the right to talk directly to the king. They reviewed the viceroys and negative reports would result in severe punishment.

The bottom of the chain were the Spanish slaves than the people under the viceroys rule. On top of the viceroys are the Audiencias. on top of the audiencias is the king of Spain.

When the Portuguese arrived in Brazil in 1500, their situation as colonialists was very different from that of Spain in Mexico and Peru. Brazil helped with sugar manufacturing and trade. The Portuguese were also able to get a lot of slaves of native people from the region. They also imported African slaves for more labor for manufacture of sugar.

The relationship between the French and the Huron dated back to the early 1600s when French fur-traders and explorers established a friendly relationship between the Quebec settlers and the Huron. The English also had a similar relationship with the native Americans, but the French kept turning the indegenous people against the English and vice versa.

The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed at Tordesillas, 7 June 1494, divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between Spain and Portugal. The Treaty of Tordesillas was intended to resolve the dispute that had been created following the return of Christopher Columbus.
