MEN

  • Military training since the age of 7
  • Boys marched, exercised, and trained in fighting
  • They wore light tunics and no shoes
  • The boys ate porridge and if they wanted more they had to steal it
  • Spartans valued duty, strength, and discipline

WOMEN

  • Taught to put service to Sparta
  • Women recieved military training
  • They ran, wrestled, and played sports
  • Women had freedom to run estates while their husbands were at war
  • Spartan women's daily lives surprised Athenian women

SPARTAN GOVERNMENT

  • Sparta wanted to bea strong city-state
  • Government had several branches:
  • An assembly
  • The Council of Elders
  • Five elected officials and two kings

  • Social order was split into several groups
  • Citizens descended from the original inhabitants
  • Non citizens who were free
  • Helots (not much better than slaves)
  • The helots worked in the fields or as house slaves
