Living in Sparta

  • Living was harsh and cruel
  • Rule number 1 was to always put your city's needs above your own
  • They conquered land and turned conquered people into helots 
  • helots-slaves owned by the city-state of Sparta
  • They treated the helots harshly

  • The helots did all the farming 
  • There were more helots than spartans 
  • The spartans were afraid of a helot revolt so they turned Sparta into an
  • armed camp
  • They treated the helots very harshly

Growing Up

  • At seven a boy left his home to live in the barracks with other boys
  • They spent hours of handling swords and spears
  • They thought that a boy that learned how to steal would be able to 
  • to live off the land in a war
  • Young boys were trained to be warriors since they were 7 years old

Growing Up

  • When boys became 20 they became soldiers and stay soldiers until they were6
  • If boys were caught stealing they would be severely punished
  • Girls also trained in wresling and spear throwing but were not expected
  • to be soldiers 
  • Women had more responsibility than women in athens

Attitudes

  • They did not mingle with eachother
  • They were not allowed to travel
  • They lacked interest in the arts
  • Known for skill and bravery
  • They were great warriors and attacked a lot

Facts

  • When they were born they were dipped in wine
  • Then they would be taken to a council to see if they had any defects
  • They would be tested if they were healthy and fit
  • Messengers would come to Sparta and they were not to hurt them
  • Persian messengers would come to tell the king of Sparta to submiss
