HOW CAN FEAR BE BENEFICIAL?

Untitled Slide

The article “The Positive Side of Fear” by Duncan Muguku explains that their are positive sides to fear. The article is on a website called ThriveYard.com and it discusses that fear is not a bad thing and can actually be beneficial to us.

One of the ways that fear benefits us is the heightened sense of awareness it gives us. The adrenaline rush that we receive from fear sharpens our decision making and helps us to get out of dangerous and risky situations. It can keep you alert and prepared throughout the fearfulness.

“When a potential threat is encountered the threat orienting system is engaged to determine whether the organism ignores the stimulus or switches into a process of (iv) threat assessment, where the organism monitors the stimulus, weighs the threat value, predicts the actions of the threat, searches for safety, and guides behavioral actions crucial to directed escape.”
So not only does fear make us aware, but the body being stimulated helps to assess threats and figure out how to get out of the situation. This is why fear can be beneficial because of how our body reacts in order for our own protection.
