SPECIAL ORDER 191 HISTORY

  • Special Order 191 was recovered in Fredricksburg
  • Special Order 191 listed all the locations of the Confederate commanders
  • Union Soldiers of the 27th Indiana found the orders around noon under a tree

GENERAL GEORGE B MCCLELLAN

  • General McClellan was the general who got the lost order
  • "Here is a paper with which, if I cannot whip Bobby Lee, I will be willing to go home"
  • The quote means if I don't win, I will go home
  • McClellan didn't act quick enough to stop the Confederates

BATTLE OF antietam

  • Special Order 191 was found on September 9, 1862
  • The Battle of Antietam started on September 17, 1862
  • It was fought between Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan
  • The battle was the bloodiest single day of fighting with 22,717 casualties
  • The battle ended in a draw but, Lincoln took it as a win for the Union
