What is This program

  • Special Olympics

-Healthy Athletes is another program offered by the Special Olympics.
-Healthy Athletes involves partners and volunteers to,
"improve the health of people with intellectual disabilities and address health conditions such as chronic pain, disease, blindness, hearing loss and shortened life span that needlessly affect this under-served population. " says Dr. Zablotsky in a recent email

Who started Special smiles

  • Dr. Nevin Zablotsky
  • Dr. Brian Shuman
  • VSDS and Northeast Delta Dental
-The co-chairmen are Dr. Nevin Zablotsky and Dr. Brian Shuman
-This will be the 22nd year
-The Vermont State Dental Society and Northeast Delta Dental sponsor every year providing lots of materials and tooth brushes for the athletes and dentists.

special smiles procedures

  • Free oral screenings
  • Follow up treatment
  • Modified examinations
  • Awards for maximum particpation
-During the Summer Special Olympics games athletes are welcome to get a free oral screening
-If the dentists think that the athlete needs urgent care they will try and find a dental office where they can go to get treated
-The dental examination includes looking for decay, periodontal disease, broken teeth, missing teeth, and any emergent needs
-Special Smiles also gives athletes medals after their screening as a motivator that taking care of your mouth is a good thing!

The Experience

  • Students
  • Dentists
-Last year students from Harvard, Boston, and Tuffs University came to help out with Special Smiles at the Summer Special Olympics
-They learn how to work with patients who have intellectual disabilities
-Dr. Shuman and Dr. Zablotsky get to teach the students how to work with the patients so they are providing further education

"The premise of the Healthy Athletes program is that if an athletes' health can be maximized, they will be able to maximize their ability to perform in their sport, as well as function in society." says Dr. Zablotsky.

-Dr. Zablotsky noted that he has noticed a difference in the athletes oral hygiene and health as he participates every year
-The athletes definitely seize the opportunity for free dental care
-The students get to work on patients who they are unaccustomed too

Special Smiles enhances the general oral health and works to provide athletes with confidence and long lives.
