-ger

  • add an -e before the -ons ending of the nous form
  • Example: manger becomes mangeons in the nous form 
  • Sentence: Nous mangeons quand nous avons faim. 
  • similar spell change verbs include voyager, plonger, etc.
many -er verbs need spell changes in order to show variations in pronunciation or are made to avoid pronunciation changes

-cer

  • verbs that end in -cer also change in the nous form
  • the -c becomes ç before the -ons 
  • Example: avancer = nous avançons
  • Sentence: Nous avançons au match du championnat. 
  • similar spell change verbs include forcer, placer, etc.

-Yer

  • the y in verbs that end in -yer changes to -i
  • no changes occur in the nous and vous forms
  • Example: ennuyer becomes  j'ennuie
  • Sentence: il m'ennuie quand il parle 
  • similar verbs include payer, essayer, balayer 

Acheter

  • acheter has an accent grave when it's conjugated
  • no accent is added in the nous and vous forms
  • Examples: j'achète, elles achètent
  • Sentence: j'achète les biscuits quand j'ai faim.
  • similar verbs are mener, peser, lever, etc.

PrÉfÉrer

  • the é in the last syllable changes to è
  • no change occurs in nous and vous forms
  • Example: tu préfères, elle préfère
  • Sentence: je préfère cette robe noire. 
  • similar verbs are espérer and répéter

-eler and -eter

  • in some verbs that end in -eler and -eter,
  • the last consonant is doubled except nous and vous
  • Example: appeler= j'appelle     jeter = je jette
  • Sentence: Je m'appelle Corey.   Je jette les roches.
  • similar verbs are rejeter and rappeler
