What is Spermicide?

  • a chemical that kills sperm
  • comes in many different forms like cream, foam, gel, suppository, film

Spermicide

Effectiveness

  • Should be used with other forms of birth control to make it more effective
  • if used alone, does not work very well

How does it work?

  • Kills sperm, preventing it from fertilising the egg

How to use it

  • spermicide must go deep into vagina near cervix
  • plastic applicator is used to insert spermicide. insert the film with your fingers.
  • if using a suppository or film, wait 5-10 minutes before intercourse
  • you must add more spermicide for each time you have sex

advantages

  • simple and convenient
  • can be bought without a prescription

disadvantages

  • Spermicides do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)..
  • You must use a spermicide each time you have sex
  • Spermicide is less effective at preventing pregnancy than some other birth control methods.
  • Spermicide may increase your risk for vaginal infections.
  • Nonoxynol-9 is a common ingredient in spermicides. It can increase the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
