Spherical Earth
PRESENTATION OUTLINE
SIZE AND SHAPE OF EARTH
- a sphere
- flattened @poles; bulge @equator
- Ave. diameter 13,000 km
eARTH'S SYSTEMS
- Atmosphere (gases/air)
- Hydrosphere (water)
- Cryosphere (frozen water)
- Geosphere (rock,soil)
- Biosphere (living things)
Earth's systems interact by exchanging matter & energy
How did earth form?
- 4.6 billion years ago
- Gravity caused particles to come together & form the solar system
gravity
- force that every object exerts on every other object
- influenced by mass and distance
- Closer = more gravitational pull
- More massive = more gravitational pull
solar nebula
- cloud of dust, gas, & ice called nebula
- gravity pulled the particles together shrinking the nebula and formed a disk
- disk rotated, denser materials in center formed the sun
- planets formed from remaining material as gravity pulled it together
- planets attracted less massive materials
How did Earth become spherical?
- Earth became massive enough to generate heat in the core
- rocks in center softened & flowed
- gravity pulled in the bumps on the surface
formation of earth's layers
- result of gravity pulling denser materials closer to the core
- thermal energy from core created materials of different densities
- 3 layers: crust (least dense); mantle; core (densest)
