SPINA BIFIDA
- This birth defect is where the brain, spinal cord, and meninges don't
- develop properly. This causes some of the spinal cord and nerves to be exposed,
- and in some cases it means the child will be paralyzed.

CAUSES
- The embryonic neural tube doesn't close correctly
- Pregnant mothers don't take enough folic acid
- Obesity in the mother increases the chances for the defect

SYMPTOMS/SIGNS
- Trouble swallowing
- Leaning disabilities
- Seizures
- Hydrocephalus (water on the brain)
- Scoliosis

TREATMENT
- There is no cure for this spina bifida
- However, there is a surgery that puts the meninges back in place
- and closes the opening in the vertebrae. But this surgery is the safest
- within the first 2 days of life.
- When the child is older, exercise keeps their bones from becoming brittle.
