PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SPINA BIFIDA

  • This birth defect is where the brain, spinal cord, and meninges don't
  • develop properly. This causes some of the spinal cord and nerves to be exposed,
  • and in some cases it means the child will be paralyzed.

CAUSES

  • The embryonic neural tube doesn't close correctly
  • Pregnant mothers don't take enough folic acid
  • Obesity in the mother increases the chances for the defect

SYMPTOMS/SIGNS

  • Trouble swallowing
  • Leaning disabilities
  • Seizures
  • Hydrocephalus (water on the brain)
  • Scoliosis

TREATMENT

  • There is no cure for this spina bifida
  • However, there is a surgery that puts the meninges back in place
  • and closes the opening in the vertebrae. But this surgery is the safest
  • within the first 2 days of life.
  • When the child is older, exercise keeps their bones from becoming brittle.
