WHAT IS A SPIRIT BEAR?

  • Called kermode bear or ghost bear because of its unique white color.
  • Spirit bears are black bears.
  • They shed their fur in the spring and it stays clean until it gets dirty from fishing or walking.

WHAT IS ITS HABITAT?

  • Great Bear Rain Forest in West-Central Columbia
  • They can also live on a few islands
  • One island they can live is at the Princess Royal Island
  • Make dens among fallen tree roots

HOW DO SPIRIT BEARS SURVIVE?

  • Can run up to 50 km per hour
  • Eat green plants, berries, but they mostly eat salmon
  • Hibernate in giant trees, protector from the winter

WHAT DOES THE SPIRT BEAR SYMBOLIZE?

  • They reminded people of a time when the world was covered in glaciers
  • Animalizes strength and confidence
  • Indicates time for healing or using healing abilities
  • Importance of appearance

ARE SPIRIT BRARS ENDANGERED?

  • There are only about 400-500 left in British Columbia
  • They are very rare
  • They are a protected species
  • The entire species has about four times as many in British Columbia
