Spite Fences is a book about a young girl living in Kinship, Georgia, named Maggie. Throughout the book, Maggie befriends African Americans and joins them in their fight for equal rights.
Maggie's mother favored her younger sister, Gardenia. If her mother became angry, Maggie would be whipped with whatever her mother could find, belts, rose stems, etc. Maggie eventually moves out of the house.
The definition of a spite fence is: a fence that is built at an extreme height, often to annoy one's neighbor; a way of letting the people living around you know that you hate them enough to want to make the neighborhood look ugly.
