Spooky Supernatural Beings In 1600 Europe

Witches were believed most commonly in 1600's Europe.
The earliest clues about the practice of magic was found in Europe.

It was believed that witches could control the forces of the world

Many people believed that witches controlled things with magic. Good and bad things happened because of witches. Ex: A woman lost her baby-it was the work of a malicious witch!

Witches=The Devil

Witches were given their power by the Devil, after they gave him their souls
Witches were believed to give their souls to the Devil in exchange for powers. Witches would use these powers to cause sickness, get revenge, cause infertility, etc. The most common type of magic was Sympathetic Magic. Simple magic was called Folk Magic.

Magic didn't always mean evil!

Witches could heal injuries, grow crops, and bless women with fertility.
Witches were sometimes called village healers, and were feared as well respected for their power.

Witches made potions to either heal or harm

Cute kitty? More like killer kitten!

Witches had demonic familiars that took the shape of common animals.
Witch familiars were demonic servants that often took the form of common household pets such as dogs, cats, and frogs. They also took the form of rarer animals, so one could never be sure if an animal was simply an animal... Familiars could shape shift and become invisible.

Witches had the ability to fly, and were often thought to fly on brooms.

Illogical tests were used to see if someone was a witch.

One of the most popular ways to test if someone was a witch was to throw them in a body of water (lake, river, etc.). If she floated, she was a witch. If she drowned, she wasn't one (though she would die). Another test was to prick a wart, insect bite, or mole with a needle. If the person felt pain, they were a witch.

Ghosts were also believed in, though not as much as witches were.

Ghosts were often believed to be the spirits of those who had died, but had unfinished business on Earth. Most ghosts were depicted as Christian males.

Fairies were believed to have powers similar to witches.
