SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN

1887-1920

EARLY LIFE

  • Born on December 22, 1887
  • Lived in the town of Erode, near the southeast of India
  • His father was an accounting clerk and his mother was a singer
  • His family were Brahmins, Hindu caste of priests and scholars

EARLY EDUCATION

  • Attended high school at the age of ten
  • He used self-study to learn mathematics and solve equations
  • Discovered a personal method of solving quartic equations
  • He fascinated classmates with his ability to preform complex problems

EDUCATION

  • Attended Government Arts College on a scholarship
  • Enrolled at Pachaiyappa’s College but failed classes other than mathematics
  • Reached the University of Madras and gained a grant from Trinity College, Cambridge
  • Managed to work out the Riemann series, elliptic integrals, hyper geometric, and the functional equations of the zeta function
  • Awarded with a Bachelor of Science degree

LATER LIFE

  • Married Janaki Ammal in 1909
  • She was just ten years old
  • Studies at the University of Cambridge in England
  • Became ill from the weather
  • Diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1917
  • Returned to India and passed away at the age of thirty-two on April 26, 1920

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Left behind numerous of unpublished notebooks that people have continued to study
  • Labled as a mathematical genius
  • Completed a seventeen page paper of Bernoulli numbers that was published in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society
  • Produced the new method for finding the asymptotic formulae, known as the circle method
