CHANGES IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

  • A group formed in Congress and made it difficult to pass civil rights laws
  • 1948- The group of Southerners break away to form the States' Rights Democratic Party (SRDP) where those who joined were called "Dixiecrats"
  • Other groups form in the Democratic Party to support civil rights laws
  • SRDP rejoins the Democratic Party but is disappointed in lawmakers who support civil rights laws

CHANGES IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY CONT.

  • 1965- about 250,000 African Americans registered to vote
  • 1967- African American voting percentages in 9/13 southern states went from 3% to 50%
  • 1956- 61% of African Americans supported the Democratic Party
  • 1968- 80+% voted for democratic candidate in the presidential election
  • As African Americans joined the Democratic Party, Southerners left

AFRICAN AMERICANS IN OFFICE

  • 1962- California elects first African American congressman
  • 1966- Edward Brooke (Massachusetts) became the first US Senator
  • 1967- Gary Stokes (Cleveland, Ohio) and Richard Hatcher (Gary, Indiana) became the first mayors of significant cities
  • Change slowly occurs in the South
  • 1972- Georgian and Texas elect their first African American congressmen

AFRICAN AMERICANS IN OFFICE CONT.

  • 1975- Tennessee elects Harold Ford Sr. As the first African American representative
  • No African Americans were elected in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Virginia until the 1990s
  • 1992- Second African American senator is elected
  • After that⬆️ Carol Moseley Braun is elected as a Senator in Illinois
  • 2008- Barack Obama becomes the first African American president
