Short Story

  • According to Webster's dictionary, short sto·ry /SHôrt ˈstôrē/ noun -a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel.
  • This is a literary art that deals with Myths, Fables and Parables, Foktales and Tales.

Why do we study Short Stories?

Learning Short story is very important for students to know how to use their imaginative minds.

Short stories teach students decision making (right and wrong).

Helps us understand feelings and emotions.

Important human experience.

CHARACTERS
- the person or animal protraying in the story.

Two Main Kinds:

Protagonist and Antagonist

Protagonist

Protagonist

  • The character who deals with the constant character (attitude and personality) in the story. They also the character who suffers roughly in the conflict.
  • Usually the constant good ones.
  • There are instances that they were at first bad, eventually on the turning point of the story, their attitude changes.
  • The main character.

Antagonist

Antagonist

  • This would be the character of the bad ones.
  • They are the villain of the story who hinders the protagonist to accomplish the plot to happen.
  • Dynamically artistic.

Kinds (2):

  • Round vs. Flat
  • Dynamic vs. constant

Setting

  • These are the places where the story has happened.
  • This is where the story takes place.
  • Important element

PLOT

Plot

  • This is the point why the story happened.
  • Plot is the storyline of the story: theme, the characters, the turning points.
  • Very important to know so that the reader will not be confused on the genre of the story.

CONFLICT

Conflict

  • This is where the protagonist suffers from the obstacles antagonist brings.
  • This is WHERE THE ANTAGONIST/ PROTAGONIST changes in attitude.
  • Love stories being built through conflicts.

TONE

Tone

  • This is not the color tone, thus, how thick would be the texture of the seriousness, sincerity, and mood of the story.

THEME

Theme

  • Theme is the topic or the genre of the story.
  • May be in the form of Romance, Tragedy, Action, Comedy, SciFi, etc.
  • This is where the story all about.

Point of View

  • This is the point of thinking of the characters or the narrator.
  • This way, they can describe and narrate the whole elements of the story.

MODE OF CHARACTERIZATION

  • Direct- the narrator describes the character by narrating the personality of the character, together with the setting.
  • Indirect- under the point of view of a specific character.

  • In this conflict, there are two human character fighting and reconciling in the end (optional).

HUman vs. Nature

  • This conflict might be affected of the climate, natural disasters, or in fictional stories where disasters were alive.

HUMAN vs. Society

  • This is an example of a vigilant character who acts bad for good people.
  • Ex: Robin Hood

HUman Vs. Self

Human vs. Self

  • This is an intrapersonal conflict where the protagonist has the confusion to decide mostly for the good effect.
