SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON-PATRON OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

SHE WAS BORN IN NEW YORK IN 1774

  • She was the first native-born citizen of the US to be canonized
  • She was born an Episcopalian, and born into a wealthy and well known family
  • She married William Seton at age nineteen
  • Together they had 5 children together

FURTHER LIFE

  • William becomes bankrupt from his business
  • He later gets tuberculosis and is sent to Italy to get better
  • Italy is where Elizabeth was first introduced to Catholicism
  • She became a catholic while in Italy
  • Unfortunately, William died of tuberculosis

ST ELIZABETH ANN SETON

  • Elizabeth returned back to New York after William's death
  • Her family abandoned her so she raised 5 kids on her own
  • She moved to Emittsburg, Maryland after

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • She established St. Joseph's Academy
  • Also, Free School for Catholic girls-first free catholic school in US
  • In 1809, became Mother Seton & established the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph
  • Which was the 1st religous community for women in the US
  • Within ten years, established two orphanages and another school

  • Even though faced with a rough life,she lived with serenity and grace
  • In 1821, she died of tuberculosis
  • St Elizabeth Ann Seton was canonized in 1975
  • Her feast day is January 4th
