YOUTH

  • Lost mother at age of 3 and grew close to her father as a result
  • Born in New York City on August 28, 1774
  • Grew up in a prominent episcopal family
  • Elizabeth's father remarried the wife disapproved if Elizabeth snd her sister
  • Elizabeth and her sister were shippied off to live with their uncle until her dad snd stepmom separated

BIOGRAPHY

  • Introduced to Roman Catholicism in June of 1894
  • Became a widow and mom of 5 children by the age of 29
  • 2 of her children died at a young age
  • Founded "Sisters of Charity" in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1809
  • Died at 46 years old on January 4, 1821 of tuberculosis

FACTS

  • first American-born citizen to be a canonized saint
  • Is patron Saint of Catholic schools
  • Cannonized by Pope Paul VI on September 14, 1975
  • Became Roman Catholic in 1805
  • Founded a community of women in 1809

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Opened a school in Baltimore in 1808 with Bishop Carroll
  • Opened first Catholic free school in Maryland
  • Was the beginning of American parochial education
  • Formed a community of women, which adopted the rule of the Daughters of Charity
  • Sisters of charity grew into 20 communities

FAMILY LIFE

  • Daughter of a prominent physician
  • Married William Seton, a successful merchant who died in 1803
  • Husband suffered of tiberculous also
  • Lost her mother at the age of 3 and grew up close to her father
  • Anna Maria and Willy were their first children

Prayer of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Lord God, you blessed Elizabeth Seton with gifts of grace as wife and mother, educator and foundress, so that she might spend her life in service to your people. Through her example and prayers may we learn to express our love for you in love for others. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
